Will the Apple iPad be the Launchpad for the Interactive Book? When Apple launched the iPad in 2010, many thought that this device is just another Tablet PC. However, as we have seen from the launch of the iPhone, the iPad is creating a whole new industry around it. The use of the Apple iPad as a primary educational tool is already being debated, and many lower cost tablet PC’s are being developed to fill this void. There are many advantages for creating a standardised education platform such as the Apple iPad. The standard hardback / softback textbook and one of the many nails in the books proverbial coffin is the increasing pressure from the UK government to close about 10% of the UK’s national and local libraries. Although the closure of libraries is driven by the need to cut local and national government expenditure, it is a clear sign that the traditional textbook is costly in terms of production, storage and distribution and there are many similarities that can be drawn from the music industry following the launch of the MP3 format and the explosion of digital music with the aid of Apple and their iPod/iTunes technology. Now Amazon seems to have had some success with their Kindle product, in that they have done what Apple did with the iPod in terms of creating the digital device as well as creating the Kindle bookstore, which not only publishes texts of great authors has also enabled budding new authors to post their work in this new marketplace, hence opening up distribution channels. However the market is not consolidating, but instead appears to be fragmenting which is not conducive to creating a standard platform and the three significant players in this market: 1 Apple with the iPad tablet PC; 2 Amazon with their Kindle offering and 3 Google with the Android operating system which is being used for the lower end Tablet PC market. The Interactive Book a concept whereby a traditional text is combined with interactive media, photos and video is one that enhances the overall user experience and can explode the imagination of the text user. In terms of educational importance, the Interactive Book can take interactive learning to a whole new level. We have also seen how well regarded Wikipedia is viewed by the masses as an interactive and self-governing educational text however the Interactive Book will be a whole new concept which can be used for educational and entertainment value alike. In terms of what Apple have done with digital music distribution and the creation of a whole new industry that surrounds digital music distribution, the questions remains will Apple’s iPad be such as mass market product in order to launch the Interactive Book as a whole new concept that will challenge one of the world’s oldest form of media. The Apple iPad when combined with great ipad accessories such as the ipad keyboard appears to be the most logical form of media device to launch the Interactive Book and create a whole new market whereby authors can create, design and publish their Interactive Books with the use of the iPad and iPad Keyboard.
