Poll Says: We’ll Wait for Apple’s iPhone 5
Waiting a few months for Verizon(VZ_) to come out with the next generation of Apple’s(AAPL_) iPhone is worth it, say TheStreet readers.
Despite the long-time-in-coming arrival of the iPhone to the nation’s largest wireless shop this week, results from a week-long poll showed that 53% of readers will hold out until summer, when Apple is expected to release the faster, more worldly 4G-capable iPhone 5.
About 31% of readers said they would purchase the Verizon iPhone 4, while the remaining respondents said they were not planning on buying the device at all. (5.66% voted for “I love Android.Apple A1185 Battery“)
Verizon launched its highly-anticipated iPhone 4 to the general public on Thursday; current Verizon customers could pre-order the device starting last week. The carrier ran out of pre-orders of the phone, selling an estimated 100,000 units in the first two hours of its release.
Despite the Verizon iPhone’s somewhat low-key start on battery store shelves Thursday — lines were pretty short at Verizon and Apple stores — the phone is expected to be a big seller, with analysts estimating that 11 million devices could be sold this year.
Of the consumers that purchased a Verizon iPhone Thursday, the majority were already subscribers of Verizon’s network, according to a small sampling polled by analyst firm Piper Jaffray.
Wise move. There’s a lot in 3.0 which will come back to the 2.x branch as part of the OS (e.g. Fragments), and I’d guess the OEMs held off knowing that shipping 2.3 devices would be a short term thing and require the maintenance effort for a 2.4 upgrade to keep the devices sellable in the long term.
The sheer number of largely generic HTC handset variants at this point makes the whole updating process that much more frustrating. I doubt they have a team on each device, and they’re clearly going to prioritize the newest handset first. The more handsets they release, the less likely what you bought six months ago will get a timely (Dell Adds Wireless Battery Charging to New Laptop) refresh, if at all.
I’d be surprised to see the original HTC Desire get another major Android version update officially at this point; not for lack of intention, but for lack of time and resources. They’re making their own lives more difficult with aftercare at the same time as frustrating their customer-base with a seemingly relentless succession of ‘point 1′ hardware upgrades that in many respects merited little commercial worth in the first place.
‘Quiet Brilliance’ wouldn’t require four revisions of the exact same thing, frankly.
